I was at a wedding consultation the other day where herbs and their scents are going to take a big part on an all green wedding reception in 2022. The idea of having lavender, rosemary, thyme, eucalyptus (already used as foliage in many events) and other herbs or scented foliage is getting more popular. I often get couples looking for a very natural look, organic and relaxed, which is the kind of designs I love doing, but how about adding an incredible smell to it?
Scent is so magical and has the power to transform a room as much as the flowers and foliage. So, aromatherapy through it’s essential oils and their therapeutic use has proven benefits for physical, mental and emotional well-being. It works by stimulating smell receptors in the nose, which then send messages through the nervous system to the part of your brain that controls memory and emotions.
Weddings and events can be quite stressful to organise, so on the day, how lovely it would be to have another element that will bring pleasure to your senses and create a sensory experience and a memory that will be registered in your brain forever! Your guests will probably remember a ceremony full of scents! I remember an event I decorated with flowers for International Women’s Day where it had a cascade of roses and eucalyptus on a stage and afterwords one of the comments was “that smell in the room was fantastic”, “it made the installation even more beautiful”.
Going back to my wedding consultation, as the couple wanted to be able to have the lovely smells of herbs in the air, I offered to spray essential oils of the herbs and on the foliage that would be decorating the tables. That way, that magic of smells would to be perceived for sure without being overpowering.
Not only at receptions but also on some bridal work like the bridal bouquet itself, groom’s buttonhole or maybe even the whole of the bridal party, bridesmaids bouquets, wrist and dress pin corsages, groomsmen buttonholes, they could all have a drop or two of essential oils on the flowers. All the great smells and none of the pollen. If you love scents and your guests are also ok with it, why not making sure you can smell the roses?
I believe flowers in any event is to be an experience for the eyes and the nose, lately imprinting in your memory and that of your guests an unforgettable happy moment.
There are no limits to making your wedding or event your own, and if you like the aroma of a garden, herbs or just lovely wet grass, why not add those smells to your room, table set-up (napkins, runners, and of course, the flower centrepieces can all be sprayed with diluted essential oils), clothes, hair and accessories like flower crowns, headpieces, floral rings, floral earrings, and any other item you can possibly have on your day. All natural and safe.
